Allegheny City Brewing, Pittsburgh, PA

On one of the nights out in Pittsburgh, GF Chic got glutened. She was not feeling well, so I tucked her in and headed out for a beer down the street at the Local Brewhouse. I arrived and grabbed a spot at the bar. Looking at the menu, there was only one local brew on tap (so much for local in Local Brewhouse) and it has Oktoberfest in the name, but was classified as an IPA. Not sure how that works. I ordered a glass and pulled out Google maps to search for any near by breweries. As luck would have it, ACB, was about a 10 minute walk. I asked random people at the bar if the neighborhood was safe to walk around, they assured me it was, and off I went.

As I grew closer, according to Google Maps, I stopped an asked a person smoking if they knew where ACB was, and alas, they did not. So I wandered on and in about 200 feet, ran into the place.

It had only been open 5 weeks when I stumbled upon it. While there, I met some of the owners.  Al  was friendly and a gracious host. The brewery is a little small, but that makes it special. Nice rustic, small craft brewery.  As you all might know, I’m not a very social person. I felt very comfortable here. I had 2 flights of beer and left with a new growler filled with Aiko Aiko IPA. It had a nice hoppy taste.

Of the beers I tasted, there were some I liked and some I did not. I am not a big fan of the whiskey barrel styles that are popping up. I was excited for the Ginger in the Rye because I love rye beers, but I should have read the description, “pale ale brewed with ginger, aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels.” Not a fan! I know there are others out there, but not for me.

I liked the Aiko Aiko IPA and Funkhouser the best and Buster Blonde was okay also. I had 2 flights of beer so I could taste all they had and left with a new growler filled with Aiko Aiko IPA which has a nice hoppy taste. I will definitely try to stop by again if I ever find myself in Pittsburgh.
